Sativex - Over 40% of suffers of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) experience spasticity. Spasticity is an over active stretch reflex that can result in the feeling of stiffness in affected muscle groups. It varies in severity from just a slight tight feeling to a fully rigid muscle. There are pharmaceutical treatments, the most common being Baclofen, botulinum toxin and Tizanidine. There is a fairly new treatment called Sativex that is a cannoboid spray used to treat moderate to severe spasticity in MS patients who have already tried other treatments. Rather than a tablet or injection, Sativex is a spray you use on your tongue. There was been reassuring evidence in studies that have shown about 7 in 10 people who use Sativex experience a 20% reduction in their spasticity and 4 in 10 experience a 30% improvement. In the UK Sativex is currently only licensed for MS patients but in the future this may expand to other conditions ... See MoreSee Less

Background + symptomsIt is estimated that there are roughly 20000-25000 people living with Mysthenia Gravis in the UK with the median age of onset being 63 years old. 78% of cases are in those over the age of 50. It is a rare autoimmune condition that can cause weakness in the limbs but the most common initial presentation is weakness in the facial muscles which may present as drooping of the eyelids (ptosis), double vision (diplopia), slurred speech (dysarthria and altered swallow (dysphagia). In more extreme circumstances where it isn’t caught early, people may have significant limb weakness and respiratory weakness which can be life threatening.PathophysiologyThe abnormal autoimmune response causes the body to attack or block our own acetylcholine receptors. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter which essentially helps carry a message between different nerve cells. ... See MoreSee Less
